Embrace the Why!Physics is the most basic and fundamental science, and it supplies much of theconceptual and technical frameworks for chemistry, engineering, astronomy, biology, and neuroscience. Itprovides the deepest answers to questions about the natural world that begin with “why.” Its influenceon civilization has been profound, leading to revolutions in the way we see the world as well as a nearlyendless array of technical innovations. At ǿմý you can gain a solid grounding in fundamentalscience while exploring applications in a diverse range of areas, from particle physics to cosmology topractical problems in engineering and applied science.

We offer the B.A. in Physics and the B.S. in Engineering Physics, as well as a minor in Physics. Studentswork in a rigorous but supportive environment, getting immediate access to professors and researchopportunities to prepare them for future graduate work or technical careers.

Our innovative “Computing Across the Curriculum” initiative incorporates simulation, computational methods, and programming throughout all core physics courses, providing you with the practical skills needed to tackle real problems, not just textbook ones.

The world needs Physics teachers! ǿմý is a member of the PhysTEC consortium, and supports students interested in secondary physics education​ in multiple ways. The McCloy Fellowship offers opportunities to teach physics, mentoring with in-service teachers, and membership in professional societies.​

ǿմý University Awarded National Science Foundation Grant for STEM Education

STEM faculty at ǿմý University were recently awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) S-STEM grant of $999,348 to support recruitment and retention of students from under-represented populations in STEM fields through ǿմý’s Cardinal Science Scholars (CSS) program.  This five-year program will support two cohorts of 11 students each for four years of undergraduate education in STEM subjects — a total of 22 four-year scholarships for students majoring in biology, environmental science, zoo and conservation science, biochemistry and molecular biology, chemistry, engineering or physics. Associate Professor of Chemistry Brigitte Ramos leads the project team of professors including Joan Esson, professor of chemistry; David Sheridan, associate professor of biology and earth science; Meredith Meyer, associate professor of psychology; Elena Caruthers, assistant professor of engineering;…
