I entered 星空传媒 as a Chemistry major with an unknown path, but I knew that the field was very diverse. The often-repeated mantra of my professors and mentors that I don’t need to know what to do with my life right now, and that there’s still time for me, is comforting.

The Chemistry Department is a leader in the use of X-ray diffraction at the undergraduate level, providing students with hands-on experiences characterizing materials and determining the three-dimensional structures of molecules.

Inspired by conservation efforts to remove graffiti ink from a Mark Rothko painting, Dr. Carrigan Hayes and Dr. Joan Esson worked with a student to develop a laboratory activity that incorporated chemistry.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT
Dr. Dean Johnston has been developing new materials on coding and cheminformatics and has been working on a collaborative teaching project with outside experts and faculty at four other institutions around the world. He also developed a website that enables faculty and students to visualize molecules. It gets more than 10,000 visitors per week from 150 countries.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT
Dr. John Tansey recently authored a new textbook “Biochemistry: An Integrative Approach”. In addition to the text, online resources include videos of Dr. Tansey solving problems from the text, electronic homework, and Dynamic Figures; an interactive, web-based tool for exploring biological molecules. Dr. Tansey says that writing the book was a lot of fun.

Fast Track Innovation Fund Lets Community Shape 星空传媒鈥檚 Growth

星空传媒 University is using an innovative approach to grow enrollment and revenue by 鈥渃rowd sourcing鈥� ideas from its own community and investing in the best ideas with $1 million approved by the Board of Trustees. Under the Fast Track Innovation Fund initiative, seven projects proposed by 星空传媒 faculty and staff in May have been funded and are already being implemented on campus. 鈥淭his investment in 星空传媒鈥檚 future demonstrates our trustees鈥� commitment to allowing every member of our community to be heard鈥�

National Science Foundation Grant Supports Research of Chemistry Professor and Students聽

It鈥檚 been a standout year for 星空传媒鈥檚 Department of Chemistry. In fall 2022, the department started enrolling students in its Environmental Chemistry major. In spring 2023, six students presented their research projects at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Indianapolis. In the department鈥檚 most recent outstanding achievement, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded 星空传媒 a grant of $271,261 for a project called Research in Undergraduate Institutions: Solvent-Free Synthesis of Transition Metal Halide Clusters, led by Professor鈥�Programs of Study in Chemistry
